Billy Strings Releases 'So Much for Goodbyes' and Fills the Ionia Fairgrounds

So Much for Goodbyes, the fifth Billy Strings studio album, was released on Friday, August 28 through Reprise Records. The 16-track record was produced by T Bone Burnett and Strings, and was announced on June 30.

Strings spent release weekend at home. The album landed on the opening day of the first Ionia Freak Fair, a two-day festival he hosted on August 28 and 29 at the Ionia Fairgrounds in Ionia, Michigan, roughly 30 miles from where he grew up. The event was sold out.

The record is about his mother, Debra Apostol, who died in June 2025. The cover is an original piece she made. The closing track is called “Debra’s Waltz.”

MLive reported that Strings drew more than 28,000 people on the festival’s second day.

Friday’s bill included Leftover Salmon and Lindsay Lou across two sets, with one cover performed as a tribute to Dolly Parton.

Saturday brought Sierra Hull, Michael Cleveland, Terry Barber and Greensky Bluegrass into the headlining set. That night closed with a roughly 30-minute sequence that opened on a Greensky Bluegrass original, moved through a Strings composition and returned to where it started. The Greensky song was performed by that band for the first time.

What Strings has said about it

Strings described the album’s subject plainly when he released the single “10,000 Miles From a Friend” on August 21.

“I made this record to honor my mother,” he said. “To notice and embrace this very significant period of grief in my life and make art from it.”

He first played that song live in May 2025 and has performed it roughly 20 times since.

What is on it

The album runs 1 hour, 15 minutes and 29 seconds across 16 tracks, opening with “I’m One of Those” and closing with “Debra’s Waltz.” Two songs were released ahead of it: “Burn the Other End,” co-written with Paul Hoffman, in June, and “10,000 Miles From a Friend” in August.

Strings and Burnett had not worked together before this record.

How it was made

The main sessions ran January 17 to 23 and January 27 to 31, 2026 at Sound Emporium in Nashville, with Brandon Bell engineering and Skyler Chuckry assisting.

“Debra’s Waltz” was recorded separately, on January 12 at Third Man Studios in Nashville. Further recording followed on February 21 at Belair.

Michael Piersante mixed at The Village in Los Angeles and Gavin Lurssen mastered at Lurssen Mastering. Jeff Powell handled the vinyl mastering at Take Out Vinyl in Memphis. Bill Orner is credited as executive producer, with photography and graphic design by Dana Trippe.

Winter dates, and none in New York

Strings announced a winter 2027 run on the album’s release day. It opens with five nights at the ExploreAsheville.com Arena in Asheville, North Carolina from February 4 to 9, adds two at Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia on February 12 and 13, and closes with two nights at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on February 19 and 20 and one at the Ryman Auditorium on February 21.

A Ryman ticket requires the purchase of a Bridgestone ticket. The artist presale begins September 9, with the public on-sale two days later.

No New York dates are on that itinerary. Strings played Bethel on August 3.

The vinyl was plated and pressed at Paramount Pressing & Plating in Denver. The label’s announcement in June also named a “sun core” variant, which the artist’s own store does not carry.
